Planning Our Global Twitter Chat: Hana's Suitcase

My students are very excited about our first twitter chat and planning is well under way.  Once again, this is Real World Learning.  We don't know what the outcome will be, we're doing new work and so it is up to us to develop a model.

We had much discussion and finally came up with a hashtag. We decided on #hana62 for obvious reasons. First, Hana's Suitcase is what prompted this event and we are Class 62.  It is short and to the point.

We also decided on November the 10th as it's the day before Remembrance Day and will give us enough time to plan.  Yesterday we created our to do list. We had a great discussion and generated many ideas about tasks and roles.

We came up with:

1. Blog about the event on our own blogs.
2  Advertise in social media.
3. Invite people: George Brady, Fumiko, author Karen Levine, classrooms, kids in Germany, survivors, veterans, anyone.
4 Designated tweeters who will tweet our invitation out on a regular basis.
5 Avatar for our class - the egg has to go.
6. Photographer to document our process.
7. Google Map managers - create and plot participants
10. Writer- guest blogger

People naturally fell into roles. William for example has an interest in photography so he's taking pictures, Dexter, Kyle and Ben wanted to tweet (note, there are 3 Bens in our class).
Ben likes to draw so he's designing our avatar.
Megan is an exceptional writer so she became my first guest blogger.
We wanted to contact some people personally, so Seamus, Tristan, Mackenzie and Emily offered to do that. We discussed what should go in a contact email, developed a writing plan and they set to work.
Lauren, Scarlett, Kiersten and Nicole have created our Google Map and will begin plotting commenters and participants.  They are very excited about this part.

As we get further into planning the students are coming up with more and more ideas about how to manage the actual day and what else needs to be done or should be considered. As with the app project last year, they have seized control and I have shifted into my role as facilitator. It's a great place to be!

  1. I am excited for this on many levels. I want my grade 7's to see how this all works, I want to see how you make this work with a group of students and I'm hoping we all learn more about Hana's Suitcase.
    I'm so thankful for twitter!
