Final Planning Stage

We have entered the final stage of planning for our first global twitter chat on Nov 10. #hana62. Much has happened this week, some of  it at a very rapid pace.  Word of our project is spreading nicely through social media thanks to our PLN who have been sharing our project and retweeting our tweets. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

We lost a day of planning today because we were at a Bulldog's hockey game (we are in Canada, afterall :) ! So it is a bit of a scramble now, but we will be ready.

Aviva Dunsinger @grade1 mentioned that @shareski's father-in-law was willing to talk about the holocaust and we'll be skyping with him and livetweeting it at 11:10.

Megan's post is causing the most awe in the class.  It now has 279 views on my blog and over 120 views on The Global Classroom site. Numbers continue to go up. Already the "world" means something different to my students than it did two weeks ago. Their and my perception of place has changed.

My job at this point is to help the students pull it all together by the end of the day tomorrow so that we are ready to go on Thursday. Students have preplanned their tweets. As a class we decided on important topics to tweet about. To make this easy for them, tonight I am organizing their tweets into one document. They will then only have to cut and paste their tweets. We will also add important links. This should alleviate some of the worry about thinking on the spot.  I do have photos of the planning sheets and will add them later. Students will also be free to comment, reply and retweet as others (we hope) join our conversation.

Students will be in groups of 2-3 and each group will have 30 minutes to tweet. Yesterday we selected topics, partners and times for tweeting. They came up with:

1. How our project started
2. Hana's life before WWII
3. Rise of the Nazis
4. Invasion of Czechoslovakia
5. Nurmberg laws, proganda and how Hana's life changed
6. Terezin or Theresienstadt
7. Auschwitz
8. Fumiko and George Brady
9. Questions to ask participants.
10 Important links
11. Interacting with global participants/ questions to ask, retweeting

(I do have photos and will load them at a later point)

The class is very aware that what we are doing is at the forefront of social media in education and we have a responsibility to do this well. We have been transparent about our process and we hope to show the world that it's ok to open the door to social media in our classrooms, that wonderful things can happen.  Mistakes will probably be made, the unexpected will happen. We will have to think on our feet and ask that we be allowed to make our mistakes visibly, but in a supported way so that after Nov 10 ends, everyone has the opportunity to learn and grow.
