App

Our app project has won the National Ken Spencer award. http://www.cea-ace.ca/awards/spencer-award

We wish Ian and his family well who've experienced a series of unfortunate events culminating in the flooding of their home. This has led to a delay in the release of our app, but we know as soon as he is able our project will be back on track. No worries Ian!

Last summer I was invited to present our project at the global econference Reform Symposium 3
This link will take you to the presentation which gives an overview of our process, real world learning and project based learning.

I have to say, that this is the most engaging activity that I've ever worked on with a class. When summer vacation started there was still work to be done. As soon as school began, students who were no longer in my class returned on their breaks to finish the app. Astonishing!

Ian and class 62 created the I Live Over Here wiki, which became our working tool for communication during this project, detailed info including tools that we used can be found on it. You can also preview the beta version here!

Twitter, gmail, Skype and of course, blogging were also key to communications.

This was a year like no other, for my students and for me. This post was written in June but I'm including it here as the students tell how they felt about being in a connected classroom and working on the app project.

There is still much to be done at the programming end: about another 30 hours of technical work, including running tests to ensure that it won't crash.  We are also working on scalability. There are two other classes now participating, but the goal of the project is to allow classes around the world to contribute their own communities to our app.  Our plan is to broaden the possibilities for all learners! We must now refine the wiki and lay out the how to process more clearly so that there is maximum user friendliness.

We would like to take a moment though to share who we are with you.
