I Wasn't Expecting This

When I began blogging last December and sharing the process of transforming myself as an educator I had no idea of the richness that was about to enter my life.  This leap into transparency has been nothing but positive. Many unexpected events and moments have occurred - sometimes daily - that have often left me gasping in awe at the power of social media.

This week during parent-teacher interviews, I once again felt awe at what is occurring because of my willingness to reveal how learning happens in my classroom.  One unexpected outcome is that parents have recognized how they can support and contribute to the learning process.  I have had several parents come forward and offer their contacts, resources and expertise to support what we are doing.  One parent put into my hands original documents that belonged to her grandfather from his time in a concentration camp and the story of her grandmother's escape TWICE from Auschwitz!  Another has referred me to a holocaust survivor who is willing to speak to my class.  Those who are regular readers feel connected and informed.  Blogging is drawing us together into a community of sharers and learners. No, I certainly never expected this.

  3. Hello. My name is Ashley Cohen. I am a student in Dr. Strange's EDM310 class at the University of South Alabama. I really admire you as an educator. You inspire me to want to use a great amount of technology in my classroom when I become an educator. No doubt, blogging is a great tool. When I started blogging, I was wondering what the purpose was. But once I started staying active with it, it has become very essential. Thanks for all your hard work as an educator. :)
