What are the new basics?

I've been thinking a great deal of what the new "basics" should be. What exactly should my students know?  What should be in their toolkit?

They should know how to:

1.  set privacy settings when they create an account.
2. create a digital portfolio.
3. create their own sites: blogs, wikis, websites etc.
4. use a presentation tool.
5. use communication tools such as twitter effectively.
6. work in a collaborative document.
7. use an audio tool.
8. grammar and spell check their work.
9. upload and download.
10. compress and uncompress files.
11. develop a positive web presence.
12. conduct effective searches.
13. trace their digital footprint.
14. use social media.

Any other suggestions?

  1. They should know how to:

Not put too much faith in a system that does not think. (don't give up completely on pen and paper, and face to face conversations)

Understand that "completely protected or secure" means that some point your informaion will be hacked and you will have to know how to deal with this.
