Globe and Mail: Classrooms of the Future Now

Well, we've made it into the Globe and Mail! I've been recognized as one of the innovators leading classrooms of the future now, as part of the "The Future of Education" series.
The web version doesn't include photos, so I will scan and post.
This was a thrilling moment for my students and myself.  It's a team effort though. From Ian, Esa and Cynthia, to my amazing colleagues at Dundas Central, to my husband who provides the tech expertise and tools that I lack, to my daughters who listen to me blather on, to admin who provides support and encouragement to my PLN on twitter to ...

... of course ... my students ... my amazing students.  You're the ones who've pushed me forward, especially those who've embraced new technology and encouraged me to take risks. I've learned alongside you and it is a privilege to be your ... no, I just can't say "teacher" anymore ... your colearner.

I want to let you know how proud I am of you. You are taking what we've learned and making it your world. I see you building excellent digital footprints, using social media to reach those from whom you wish  to learn, pushing boundaries and exploring new territory. I see you creating original work and developing systems that your peers can follow. You are the trailblazers and that's a pretty nice tag to have on your digital profiles!

I remember the first time a student used social media to contact me outside of my regular teaching day with a request for assistance about a tech problem he was having with our livestreaming site: Hub21 TV. I looked at the comment and realized that everything I knew about teaching and education was about to change. I stared at it for quite a while wondering what to do. Finally, I thought to myself ... if this was anyone else and I had the expertise, I would immediately respond. This is merely a learner wishing to learn, using the tools available for learning.  I replied ...  I entered fully into this world of anytime, anyplace, anyhow and from anyone learning. And am I ever glad that I did.

A note for my two daughters - under my picture - it says "cool" right on the front page. It's in print, so it will no longer be in question. Now you know for sure! ;)

  1. Hello. My name is Ashley Cohen. I am a student in Dr. Strange's EDM310 class at the University of South Alabama. First, I would like to say congratulations on your great accomplishment. Hard work does pay off. I wish there were more teachers like you who would take initiative to implement technology and not be afraid to do so. Many more teachers also need to learn that by implementing technology, you must be the teacher and a learner. I just wish more teacher would be like you Mrs. Heidi and just "Go For It". :) Thanks for the work you've done to implement technology. And once again, Congratulations on your major accomplishment.

  2. Hi Ashley, I've had a few visitors from Dr. Strange's EDM class on my blog. I am pleased to see that teacher training programs are encouraging new teachers to embrace technology. Thank you for your kind words and good luck with your studies.
